Care & Finishes
Living with your piece
Every piece leaves the shop finished with either beeswax or carnauba wax combined with purified, heat-treated walnut oil or linseed oil. Everything is food safe.
Everyday use
Wipe clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry with a towel. Don’t let liquids sit or soak. Never put wood items in the dishwasher!
Refreshing the finish
Food-safe finishes will wear over time. When a piece starts to look dry, refresh it:
- For pieces that touch food, use a product labeled salad bowl finish or cutting board oil/wax.
- For decorative or non-food-contact pieces, a standard furniture wax works well.
- Apply thinly, let it soak in, then buff with a soft cloth.
If you choose not to refresh the finish on your piece with ongoing use, bare wood will develop its own patina; that’s the good stuff.
Wood will move somewhat with changes in moisture content, unfinished wood more so.
What to avoid
- Dishwashers, microwaves, and soaking.
- Direct sunlight for long periods (fades and dries the wood).
- Extreme humidity swings. Keep pieces away from radiators and shower ledges.
